Part a. what you plan to study at university and why.

To study Ocean and Naval Architectural Engineering at MUN is my plan which is based on the following reasons. First of all, Naval Engineering at MUN is the best in all of Canada. Students who graduated from here are working in important positions in almost every part of the world. Secondly, my hometown, China is undergoing a dramatic growth in economy especially for its ship building industry. Last year, it surpassed Korea to be the world’s largest exporter of ships. After I graduate and go back to China, I think I can have an excellent career. The last and most important reason is I really love this field. When I was a little boy, I had a dream that one day I would design an ocean-going vessel. To be honest, I applied to study at MUN because of its Naval Engineering department so that I can fulfill my dream.

Part b. Your experience learning English and studying English for academic purposes.

I studied English as my second language for 8 years. However, I didn’t do that for academic purposes until 2004. During that year, my parents decided to send me to study in an English-speaking country in the future. So I bought an English edition textbook about physics and began to learn how to say many academic words in English, for instance, atom, momentum, and gravitation. Fortunately, English as a dominant language in science is popular in China now. Our textbooks always have glossaries in English at the end, so I have the chance to remember a lot of words from it. After I came to St. John’s 3 months ago, I went to listen to a chemistry lecture almost every weekday after I finished my ESL class in the morning. I found that I learned some academic words and scientific phrases from the teacher’s speaking every time.（ In my opinion, it not only helped me to improve my English listening skill but will also overcome some academic problems after I start my academic study at MUN in the near future.）
