Chinese candidates have a strong tendency to use Trash Phrases.Trash phrases are phrases that every candidate uses because they are easy to memorise and they mistakenly believe that they will impress the examiner.Some of these are translated from Chinese,and others are just plainly ridiculous.Candidates often come into the examination thinking that what they have memorized is highly original,and that they are going to shine in the examiner's eyes.加拿大雅思

As mentioned in the last section,one of the problems that most candidates encounter is that they are unable to organise their ideas logically.One way in which you can improve how coherent and logical your speech sounds is to use linking words.Using the correct linking words can make your argument sound much more forceful,and these are really going to help improve your score!Before we look at some good linking words,lets take a look at some typical examples from the exam.

When it comes to the question of what the government can do to encourage people to use public transport more,firstly,I think that the government should make more space for buses on the road.Secondly,they should reduce the price of the tickets so that everyone can afford to travel.Next,the government should limit the number of driving licenses that it gives out each year.Finally,people will start to travel more by bus and subway.

Taking a look at the answer we can see that the candidate has structured the suggestions like a list.We can see the following sequencing words:

The logic of the sequence is not actually too bad,the suggestions are a little simple,but they make sense and there is a certain kind of logic behind the argument.This structuring will push the candidate to a maximum score of 6.The problem,however,is that the way the list is presented sounds like a little girl telling her daddy what she want to do for her birthday:

The problem lies in the fact that this language does not sound mature,and shows very little flexibility in ordering events.Furthermore,even though the candidate gives four pretty good suggestions,those suggestions are not examined deeply enough.Let's take another look at the question and see if we can throw in some more mature sophisticated sequences and develop the argument a bit more.Take a look at this level 9 answer below.

In order for the government to encourage more people to use public transport like buses or subway trains,it must do two things:provide faster cheaper public people who already use it;and also focus on getting drivers to change their travel habits.

The first goal could be achieved by widening bus lanes so that buses can travel faster and also by increasing the regularity of subway trains.Drivers could be encouraged to use their cars less by increasing road tax or offering tax incentives to leave their cars at home.

Looking at this answer we can see that the candidate has thrown out all of the baby sequencing words,and used sentences to set up the structure.The question is set up by presenting the desired result first:

這個(gè)答案中,考生摒棄了所有低幼的序數(shù)詞,選擇用句子來(lái)銜接和搭建整個(gè)結(jié)構(gòu)??忌紫乳_(kāi)門見(jiàn)山地陳述題目中預(yù)期要達(dá)到的目的:

After listing these things it goes on to mention now this could be achieved:

This is a very sophisticated use of sequencing and indicates to the examiner that you are not a low or mid-level candidate,but rather a high-flier 7,8,or 9.By not only introducing high-level linking words and phrases into your answers,but also giving more thought to the order and logic of what you want to say,you will push up your score a great deal.
